About these tools
A PDF is the format people reach for when a document has to look the same everywhere, which is exactly why it is so awkward to change. These tools cover the jobs that come up anyway: merging a scanned contract with a cover letter, pulling three pages out of a fifty-page report, rotating pages that came out of the scanner sideways, shrinking a file that will not fit an email, and putting a signature on a page without printing it first.
Everything runs inside the browser using pdf-lib and pdf.js, so the document is read into memory on your own machine and never uploaded. That matters more for PDFs than for most files: contracts, passports, bank statements and medical results all travel as PDFs, and most free tools ask you to hand them over to a server first.
A few things are worth knowing before you start. Compression only helps when a file is mostly images — a text-only PDF is already about as small as it gets. Password protection stops a file being opened, but the owner password that restricts printing is enforced on the honour system by readers, so treat it as a deterrent. And flattening a form makes the answers permanent, which is usually what you want before sending it on.
