Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between the two cutting modes?
- An exact cut re-encodes the video so it can begin on the precise frame you chose, which takes about as long as the clip is. The fast cut copies the existing video untouched, which finishes in seconds but can only begin at a keyframe, so the clip may start up to a couple of seconds early.
- Will the quality drop?
- Not at all with the fast cut, since nothing is re-encoded. With the exact cut there is one re-encode, which is a small loss you would have to look for.
- Can I remove a piece from the middle instead?
- Not in one pass. Cut the part before it, cut the part after it, then join the two, although joining needs both pieces to share a codec, which they will if they came from the same file.
- Is there a length limit?
- Only your device. The whole file is held in memory while it is worked on, so a phone will manage a few hundred megabytes and a laptop considerably more.
