Frequently asked questions
- Why will nothing open my HEIC files?
- HEIC is Apple's default photo format. Safari can display it, but most other browsers, Windows without an add-on, and many upload forms cannot. Converting to PDF sidesteps that entirely, since PDF opens everywhere.
- Is the conversion done on a server?
- No. HEIC decoding runs in your browser using a WebAssembly decoder loaded only when a HEIC file is added. Photographs of passports and contracts never leave your device, which is exactly why this matters.
- Why is it slower than JPG to PDF?
- HEIC has to be decoded before anything else can happen, and no browser except Safari can do it natively. The decoder is a few hundred kilobytes and each photo takes a moment. Large batches on an older phone will feel slow.
- Does the photo lose quality?
- There is one re-encode, from HEIC to JPEG at high quality, because PDF cannot store HEIC. For documents and receipts the difference is invisible.
