PDF to text

Pull the text out of a PDF.

Get the plain text out of a PDF that already has one — a document exported from Word, a report, an invoice. Runs in the browser, so nothing about the file leaves your device.

How to use it

  1. Add the PDF.
  2. Press Extract text and wait for every page to be read.
  3. Copy the result or save it as a .txt file.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the result empty?
The PDF has no text layer — it is a scan or a photo saved as a PDF, which is a picture of text rather than text. Use the image-to-text (OCR) tool instead; it reads the picture directly.
Does the layout survive?
No, only the words do, roughly in reading order. Columns, tables and headers and footers are not reconstructed — this is for getting the text out, not a layout converter.
Does Cyrillic extract correctly?
Yes, as long as the PDF embeds its fonts properly, which is true of the vast majority of PDFs produced by Word, Excel or a browser's own PDF export.
Is the file uploaded?
No. It is read and processed entirely in your browser.
