Frequently asked questions
- Do I need to know the password?
- Yes, if the file requires one to open. This tool removes protection from documents you can already access — it does not break or guess passwords, and it will not help with a file you have been locked out of.
- Why does it work with an empty password?
- Some PDFs carry only an owner password, which restricts printing or editing but lets anyone open the file. Those decrypt with an empty password, which is why the field can be left blank. Statements and payslips more often use a real user password.
- Is the original changed?
- No. The file on your device is only read. You get a new, unencrypted copy, and the protected original stays as it was.
- Is anything lost?
- Pages, text and images are copied across exactly. Removing encryption requires rebuilding the document, so some document-level extras such as bookmarks, form fields and attachments are not carried over. Title, author and subject are preserved.
