About these tools
Small text jobs that are surprisingly hard to do properly: counting words the way an editor or a university counts them, repairing text that has come out as a row of question marks and accented gibberish, and getting an accurate word count out of a .docx file without opening Word.
Everything runs in the page. The mojibake repair is the one people arrive at in a hurry — it takes text that was written in one encoding and read in another, and walks the common Cyrillic and Turkish cases backwards until it finds the interpretation that produces real words rather than symbols.
Word counts are less objective than they look. Different tools disagree about hyphenated words, numbers, headings and footnotes, so a count that matters for a submission should be taken from the same tool every time rather than from whichever one is open. The .docx counter reads the document body and leaves headers, footers and comments out, which is the convention most institutions use.
