Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between inclusive and exclusive VAT?
- Exclusive means the price does not yet contain the tax, so VAT is added on top. Inclusive means the price already contains it, so the tax is extracted from within. Prices in Uzbekistan and most of Europe are quoted inclusive, and getting this backwards is the most common mistake in VAT sums.
- How do I take VAT out of a price?
- Tick 'Amount already includes VAT'. Dividing by 1.12 for a 12% rate is correct; subtracting 12% is not, and gives a number that is too low. The tool does the division for you.
- Why is a 50% rise then a 50% fall not back where you started?
- Because each percentage applies to a different base. 100 rises by 50% to 150; 50% of 150 is 75, so falling by 50% lands on 75, not 100. Use the '% change' mode to see the real change between two figures.
- Is the discount before or after tax?
- The discount mode works on whatever figure you enter, so it depends on which price you type in. For an inclusive price, the result is also inclusive.
