Frequently asked questions
- Which fill should I choose?
- The blurred background is what the platforms' own editors do and it suits most footage. Use crop when the subject is dead centre and you want the frame filled properly. Use black bars when nothing may be lost and the look does not matter.
- Will cropping cut someone's head off?
- It can. Cropping takes the middle of the frame, so anybody standing near the edge of a landscape shot will be cut out of a vertical one. If you are not sure, use the blurred background, which keeps everything.
- Why is 1080 pixels wide enough?
- Because every one of these platforms re-encodes what you upload and none of them keep more than that. A 4K upload costs you time and bandwidth and arrives looking the same.
- Which size is which platform?
- Story or Reel is 9:16 and covers Instagram Stories and Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts. Square is 1:1 and tall is 4:5, both for Instagram and Facebook feed posts. Landscape is 16:9 for YouTube.
