Frequently asked questions
- Why will nothing open my WebP file?
- WebP is well supported in browsers but much less so elsewhere — older versions of Windows Photo Viewer, some office software and many upload forms still reject it. JPEG is accepted essentially everywhere.
- Does converting lose quality?
- There is one re-encode from WebP to JPEG, so a small amount is lost. At high quality it is not visible on photographs. The bigger practical change is that the file usually gets larger, since JPEG is less efficient.
- What happens to transparent WebP?
- JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas become white. If transparency matters, convert to PNG instead.
- Are animated WebP files supported?
- No. Only the first frame is converted, because JPEG cannot hold animation. For animated files you would need a GIF or video converter instead.
