Frequently asked questions
- Why use WebP at all?
- It compresses better than JPG — usually 25 to 35% smaller at the same visible quality — so pages load faster and use less of a visitor's data. Every current browser supports it.
- Will it look worse?
- Not at sensible quality settings. WebP is lossy like JPG, so converting means one more round of compression; at 85 or above the difference is invisible on a photograph.
- Can I put WebP on a website?
- Yes. Every browser released in the last several years displays WebP. Only very old software struggles, which is why some sites still keep a JPG fallback.
- Does it work on Safari?
- Converting to WebP needs the browser to have a WebP encoder. Safari has had one since version 14; if yours is older the tool will say so rather than hand you a mislabelled file.
