Frequently asked questions
- How much smaller will it be?
- For photographs, often five to ten times smaller. PNG stores every pixel exactly, which suits flat graphics but is wasteful for photographic detail that JPEG can approximate almost invisibly.
- What happens to transparency?
- JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas are filled with white rather than turning black — which is what happens in tools that skip this step. If you need transparency, keep the PNG.
- Is the conversion reversible?
- No. JPEG discards information permanently, so converting back to PNG restores the format but not the lost detail. Keep the original PNG if you may need to edit it later.
- When should I not convert?
- Keep PNG for screenshots, logos, diagrams and anything with sharp edges or text. JPEG blurs hard edges into visible artefacts, which is most obvious on screenshots of text.
