Frequently asked questions
- What is EXIF data?
- A block of notes the camera writes inside the picture file. It normally holds the make and model, the exposure settings, the date and time to the second, often the camera's serial number, and — if location was on — the GPS position where you stood, accurate to a few metres. None of it shows in the picture; all of it travels with the file.
- Does removing it change the picture?
- No. The compressed image data is copied across byte for byte and only the note segments are cut out, so there is no second round of JPEG compression and no quality loss at all. The file just gets smaller.
- What is kept?
- Anything that affects how the picture looks: the colour profile, transparency, and animation frames. Removing a colour profile would shift the colours, so it stays. Everything else — location, camera, serial numbers, dates, editing history, comments — goes.
- Do social networks not already strip this?
- Most do, which is why people assume it is never there. The risk is everything that does not go through one: a photo emailed, sent as a file on a messenger, put on your own website, or attached to a marketplace listing keeps the full set of notes.
- Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
- No — and on this tool that matters more than most. The file is read and rewritten inside your browser, on your own device. A site that asked you to upload a photo to have its location removed would already have the location.
