Frequently asked questions
- Is transparency kept?
- Yes. WebP supports an alpha channel just as PNG does, so a logo with a transparent background stays transparent.
- How much smaller will it be?
- For screenshots and graphics, often several times smaller. The saving is largest on images with photographic areas and smallest on flat-colour icons, which PNG already handles well.
- Is anything lost?
- WebP here is lossy, so fine detail is approximated — invisible at high quality on most graphics, but if you need pixel-exact output keep the PNG.
- Can I make WebP in Safari?
- Only if your Safari can write WebP, which is not the same as showing it: Safari has displayed WebP since version 14 but for years could not save it from a page. The tool checks what the browser actually produced and, if it was not WebP, says so instead of handing you a PNG with a .webp name.
