Frequently asked questions
- Why are my iPhone photos HEIC?
- It is Apple's default since iOS 11, chosen because it stores similar quality in roughly half the space of JPEG. The cost is compatibility: outside Apple's own software, support is patchy. Setting Camera to 'Most Compatible' makes the phone shoot JPEG instead.
- Is my photo uploaded to a server?
- No. A WebAssembly decoder runs in your browser, loaded only when a HEIC file is added. Most HEIC converters online upload the file; this one does not, which matters for photos of identity documents.
- Why does it take a few seconds?
- HEIC uses HEVC compression, which is heavy to decode, and only Safari can do it natively. Everywhere else the decoder has to be downloaded and run in software. Expect roughly a second or two per photo.
- Does the photo lose quality?
- There is one re-encode to JPEG. At the default quality the difference is not visible for normal photographs, though the JPEG will typically be larger than the HEIC it came from.
