Frequently asked questions
- Why would I make a photo black and white?
- Documents, mostly. A photographed page in black and white with strong contrast reads far better than the yellowish original, and the file is smaller. For photographs it is a matter of taste — removing colour puts the attention on shape and light, which flatters some pictures and ruins others.
- What is the Scanned document setting?
- Black and white with the brightness lifted and the contrast pushed hard, which turns a grey photograph of a page into something closer to a scan: the paper goes white, the text goes black, and the shadow from your hand mostly disappears. Take the photo as square-on and evenly lit as you can first — this cleans up a decent photo, it does not rescue a bad one.
- Can I undo it later?
- Not from the saved file. The adjustment is applied to the pixels, which is what makes it show up everywhere rather than only in the app that made it — so keep your original. Nothing here changes the file you added; you get a new one.
- Does it lose quality?
- The picture is saved again in the same format at high quality, which costs a very small amount on a JPG as any re-save does, and nothing on PNG or WebP. Strong contrast can flatten detail in the darkest and lightest parts, so ease off if shadows start turning into solid black.
- Is my picture uploaded anywhere?
- No. The adjustment happens inside your browser, on your own device — which is worth knowing when the thing you are photographing is a document.
