Frequently asked questions

Why is the 1280 × 720 version missing?
YouTube only generates the maximum-resolution thumbnail when the uploaded video was large enough, so older and lower-resolution videos simply do not have one. When it fails to load, the next size down always exists.
Which link formats work?
Standard watch links, youtu.be short links, Shorts, embed and live URLs, and a bare 11-character video ID. The ID is extracted locally — the link is never sent anywhere.
Can I use these images freely?
Not automatically. Thumbnails are usually the uploader's copyrighted work. Referencing a video, commentary and reviews are commonly acceptable; republishing as your own or using them commercially generally is not.
Does it work for private videos?
No. Thumbnails are served from a public URL only for public and unlisted videos. Private videos have no publicly reachable image, so nothing will load.
