- Why is the 1280 × 720 version missing?
- YouTube only generates the maximum-resolution thumbnail when the uploaded video was large enough, so older and lower-resolution videos simply do not have one. When it fails to load, the next size down always exists.
- Which link formats work?
- Standard watch links, youtu.be short links, Shorts, embed and live URLs, and a bare 11-character video ID. The ID is extracted locally — the link is never sent anywhere.
- Can I use these images freely?
- Not automatically. Thumbnails are usually the uploader's copyrighted work. Referencing a video, commentary and reviews are commonly acceptable; republishing as your own or using them commercially generally is not.
- Does it work for private videos?
- No. Thumbnails are served from a public URL only for public and unlisted videos. Private videos have no publicly reachable image, so nothing will load.
