Frequently asked questions

Will the number match Word's?
It should be very close. Both split on whitespace. Small differences come from headers, footers, footnotes and text boxes, which are not part of the document body read here.
Are old .doc files supported?
No. The pre-2007 .doc format cannot be read in a browser. Open it in Word or LibreOffice and save it as .docx first.
Is the file uploaded?
No. It is read in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
Does formatting affect the count?
No. Only the text is counted — bold, headings and tables make no difference, though text inside tables is included.
