Frequently asked questions
- Will the number match Word's?
- It should be very close. Both split on whitespace. Small differences come from headers, footers, footnotes and text boxes, which are not part of the document body read here.
- Are old .doc files supported?
- No. The pre-2007 .doc format cannot be read in a browser. Open it in Word or LibreOffice and save it as .docx first.
- Is the file uploaded?
- No. It is read in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
- Does formatting affect the count?
- No. Only the text is counted — bold, headings and tables make no difference, though text inside tables is included.
