Frequently asked questions
- How is this different from just turning it up?
- Turning it up raises everything, including the parts that were already loud, until they distort. This measures perceived loudness across the file and moves the quiet parts more than the loud ones.
- What is -16 LUFS?
- The loudness target used for speech on podcasts and streaming. It is loud enough to hear on a phone in a noisy room and leaves headroom so nothing clips.
- Will it remove background noise?
- No, and it may make the noise more audible, because quiet passages come up and the hiss comes with them. Levelling and noise removal are different jobs.
- Can I use it on music?
- You can, but music is usually mastered deliberately, and levelling flattens the difference between quiet and loud passages that the musician intended.
