A normal BMI at this height means 56.7–76.3 kg.

BMI itself is the same for adult men and women — the thresholds do not differ by sex, which surprises most people. What does differ is how much fat sits behind a given BMI, so that is what the chart below is for.

Estimated body fat for a male of this BMI and age

18.1% Average

  • Essential only 2–5%
  • Athletic 6–13%
  • Fit 14–17%
  • Average 18–24%
  • High 25–45%

Estimated from BMI, age and sex using the Deurenberg equation — a population average, not a measurement. It cannot tell muscle from fat, so it reads high on anyone who trains seriously.

Waist is worth measuring too

BMI cannot see where the weight sits, and a tape measure can. Above 94 cm counts as raised risk and above 102 cm as high, for someone of your sex. Measure at the navel, standing, breathing out.

BMI is a rough screening figure, not a diagnosis. It does not distinguish muscle from fat, and is less meaningful for athletes, older adults, pregnancy and children.

Enter your weight in kilograms and height in centimetres. You get your BMI, the category it falls into, and the weight range that would put you in the normal band at that height.

How to use it

Frequently asked questions

What do the categories mean?
Below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 normal, 25 to 29.9 overweight, and 30 or above obese. These are the World Health Organization bands used for adults.
How reliable is BMI?
It is a screening figure, not a diagnosis. It uses only height and weight, so it cannot tell muscle from fat — a muscular athlete can register as overweight while carrying very little. Treat an unexpected result as a reason to ask a doctor, not a conclusion.
Does it work for children?
No. Children and teenagers are assessed against age and sex percentile charts, not these fixed bands. The same applies during pregnancy.
Why does the healthy range look wide?
Because BMI scales with the square of height, so the normal band covers a real spread of weights — roughly 20 kg at 175 cm. Where you sit within it depends on build.
